Tomorrow night, the Christina School District Board of Education is holding a “special” board meeting without a purpose.

  • There is no action to be taken

  • There is a paid employee to run PA equipment

  • There are light refreshments for board members

  • There is a lit room ($$$)

  • No rationale was given other than to meet in the wake of the referendum to “talk” about it

  • We have two full meetings scheduled in June to execute board business and to react to the referendum. There are no items under the section of actions needed based on referendum results. Anything organically discussed cannot be voted on since those items are not on the agenda for public consideration: that’s the LAW.

  • This meeting feels wholly unnecessary and likely very unproductive

  • I informed Mr. Polaski of my concerns and of my intent to not attend based on the wastefulness of this exercise.

  • CSD residents deserve better than a hastily called meeting that costs money and has no likely result to move CSD forward…here’s the agenda:

    1. Give me a break

Actually JY PLC’s always have ACTION ITEMS– they amount to chores that the admin throws on teachers, give this benchmark, take this STAR test AGAIN, collect this data. I know you try to put up the good fight but CSD is a train wreck right now. No order or discipline and just test after test (these aren’t state mandated)– And of course the writing is on the wall- I already have a knot in my stomach about next august!

It might be a good idea to hear fresh views during public comment from students and teachers and community members. Sometimes collaborating and hearing from each other is quite beneficial. Waiting until June to discuss this will likely mean less of a turn out. We need a good turn out so we can keep momentum and keep the discussion going, don’t you think?

Actually, I think that very little can happen tomorrow that will fall into the bucket of meaningful mostly because of proximity to the result. Also, if an action item arises organically from discussion it is against Delaware meetings law to vote on it tomorrow since it is not on the agenda (there are no items on the agenda). . And it isn’t free to hold special meetings. So, in this case, June 9th is close enough for the community to gather their thoughts and ideas and come full force. The ability to collaborate and hear from each other is not diminished by the passage of 12 days and in fact could be augmented, IMO.. Turnout is primarily a function of agenda items. There are no action items on the agenda tomorrow. Perhaps proximity to result will drive some turnout, but budget cutting actions in June will drive more turnout, IMO.

Mr. Polaski has called the meeting, and as long a s four board members are there, it’s a real meeting. My absence will represent just one view: that we need to be more disciplined than to call emergency meetings with no plan and no agenda. I think that sends a mixed (at best) message. I indicated to Mr. Polaski that spending money on an extra meeting with no agenda was not something I could support. We owe it to the taxpayers to show our fiscal responsibility, in big and small ways.

So, for those that want to come out, there will be a meeting… with no agenda, and no action items.

  2. I have to agree. The only reason to hold a board meeting today, is to provide fodder for the News Journal…It is kinda silly really…. But on the other hand, any reason to say the “Pledge of Allegiance” is good for America….. so perhaps in that vein, maybe the meeting should indeed go forward……..

You represent a community which is much more important than the opinion you hold. This is not about you, but rather us.

    1. I am one of the “us” for whom John speaks. And there are many of us.

I agree that there is no compelling reason to spend a nickel on a board meeting tonight.
Even if someone is bringing in a dead horse.
      It’s dead.

It is about us and that’s why as a single board member I don’t get to call or cancel a meeting.

However, that doesn’t make me wrong about it being wasteful or unnecessary On May 28, 2015 11:03 AM, “Transparent Christina” wrote:

We need to have citizens over site and transparency group that is watching who and what the board is cutting. I believe that they will cut programs and teachers that will cause the most pain to the Christiana School District voters. They are mad because they were voted down and I believe it is payback time. There is a group that went through the budget that they could get and found many areas that can be cut. Like the district paying for cellphone for people who make a far bigger salary then mine. Car allowances that were ridiculous and never approved. the board decided to cut 100,000.00 in cellphone expenses when it was exposed. there is a way to cut back and not hurt the teachers and programs that are beloved by the taxpayers. We need people that represent the people with a voice and access to the full budget. Shame on the people who called anybody that voted no a coward it takes more courage to stand up to this big machine who want to belittle you and tell you that you hate children if you don’t agree. We don’t hate children we just want our money to actually be spent on them. Contact FirstStateLiberty.org click on contact button we are working furious to work a budget that saves teachers and adminstrators and programs that the community loves.

  5. Truth is that district officials (employees) made the “cut” decisions. NOT the board. The cuts were presented to & voted on by the board.
IMO, this is NOT how things should work.
This course of actions not only reduces the power, and authority of the board, it makes one question if its existence is necessary.

Who said they were? certainly not me. Tonight’s meeting is wasteful and unnecessary and supporting it sends the wrong message it’s that simple. I am supporting the taxpayers of Christina by not attending and attempting to move the board towards more responsible behavior around calling unnecessary meetings On May 28, 2015 5:35 PM, “Transparent Christina” wrote:
